What Hampton is like

Hampton is a city in southwestern Henry County, south of Atlanta between Jonesboro and Griffin. It was a railroad town first – from 1846 to 1882 it had the only train station in Henry County – and the old downtown still reflects that. The 2020 census counted 8,368 residents, up about 81% from 2010, which tells you most of what you need to know about the housing: a small historic core surrounded by a lot of newer subdivisions.

Buyers usually come to Hampton for space and newer construction at a lower cost of entry than the closer-in suburbs, while staying within reach of I-75 and the south side of Atlanta.

Downtown and the depot

The Hampton Downtown Historic District has 25 contributing buildings. At its center is the Hampton Train Depot, built around 1881 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which now houses city offices as the Glenn Mitchell Administration and Community Building.

Downtown also has a small amount of loft-style housing, such as Hampton Lofts on East James Street, which Rayshell has sold in – an unusual option in a county that is otherwise almost entirely detached houses and townhomes.

EchoPark Speedway

Hampton is home to the NASCAR track that most people still call Atlanta Motor Speedway. It was renamed EchoPark Speedway in June 2025 and sits on Tara Place, off US-19/41. On race weekends traffic around the track is heavy, so if you are looking at homes close to it, it is worth checking the event calendar and driving the area on a busy day before you buy.

Neighborhoods and housing

Outside the downtown grid, Hampton is mostly single-family subdivisions, and with the population up by about four-fifths in a decade, a lot of that housing is recent. Because so much of the stock is new, buyers comparing homes here are often weighing builder, age and HOA rules as much as location. Schools

Public schools are run by Henry County Schools. The high schools serving the Hampton area include Hampton High School and Dutchtown High School, which opened in 2004 on Mitchell Road with a Hampton address. Attendance zones in fast-growing Henry County are redrawn from time to time, so confirm the zoned schools for a specific house with the district, and get current performance information from the district or the Georgia Department of Education.

Getting around

US-19/41 runs along the west side of Hampton: about 28 miles north to downtown Atlanta through Clayton County, and about 11 miles south to Griffin. GA-20 runs east roughly seven miles to I-75 at McDonough, which is the faster route for anyone heading up the east side of the metro. Jonesboro and Stockbridge are both a short drive north.
