What Stockbridge is like
Stockbridge is a city in northern Henry County, and its northwestern edge follows the Clayton County line. It is the first Henry County city you reach coming south out of Atlanta, and that location is the main reason people buy here: I-75 has three exits serving Stockbridge (222, 224 and 228), I-675 runs up to I-285, and Highway 138 crosses east to Conyers and west toward Jonesboro.
As with most south metro towns, the Stockbridge mailing address covers more ground than the city limits, so some homes listed as “Stockbridge” are in unincorporated Henry County. It is worth checking which, because it affects services and the tax bill.
Eagle’s Landing
Eagle’s Landing is the Stockbridge community built around the Eagle’s Landing Country Club golf course. Monument Park at Eagle’s Landing is nearby, and Piedmont Henry Hospital is on Eagle’s Landing Parkway.
You may see Eagle’s Landing described as a separate city. It is not: in November 2018 voters rejected a proposal to create a new City of Eagle’s Landing out of part of Stockbridge, by roughly 57% to 43%. It remains a community within the Stockbridge area.
Parks and green space
Panola Mountain State Park, about 1,600 acres, has a Stockbridge address and sits where the South River divides Henry, Rockdale and DeKalb counties; the granite mountain itself is in Rockdale County.
Closer in, Hidden Valley Park is a 115-acre Henry County park on Spraggins Memorial Parkway in Stockbridge.
Neighborhoods and housing
Stockbridge is mostly single-family subdivisions, from established neighborhoods to golf-course homes around Eagle’s Landing and newer construction, with townhomes in the mix. Because the range of age and price is wide, the most useful first step is usually to decide how close to I-75 you need to be. The live listings at the top of this page show what is on the market now.
Schools
Public schools are run by Henry County Schools. High schools serving Stockbridge include Stockbridge High School, Woodland High School on North Moseley Drive, Eagle’s Landing High School (which has a McDonough address) and parts of the Dutchtown High School zone. Which one a house is zoned for depends on the address, so confirm with the district before making an offer, and get current performance information from the district or the Georgia Department of Education.
Commuting from Stockbridge
Downtown Atlanta is about 20 miles north. Most commuters take I-75 north, or I-675 north to I-285 for the east and south sides of the Perimeter; Hartsfield-Jackson is up I-75 north, near its junction with I-285. US-23 is the older surface route into the city. Highway 138 is the cross-county road, running east to Conyers and I-20.
Buying in Stockbridge: what to check
- Whether the house is inside Stockbridge city limits or in unincorporated Henry County.
- Which I-75 exit – 222, 224 or 228 – you will use, and how long the drive to it takes.
- The HOA and any club membership terms in golf communities such as Eagle’s Landing.
- The zoned schools for the address – confirm with Henry County Schools.
Two things apply anywhere in Georgia. Closings are conducted by a licensed Georgia attorney, not a title or escrow company. And once you own the home and live in it as your legal residence on January 1, you can apply for the homestead exemption with Henry County – the usual deadline is April 1 for that tax year. Some local governments offer additional exemptions, so ask the county what applies to your address.
