What makes Peachtree City different

Peachtree City was planned before it was built. It was chartered on March 9, 1959, after developers had assembled more than 12,000 acres of Fayette County farmland, and it was designed from the start as a series of villages separated by green space rather than as one grid of subdivisions. The 2020 census counted about 38,000 residents.

The thing everyone mentions first is the golf carts. The city maintains a network of more than 100 miles of shared-use paths for pedestrians, cyclists and motorized carts, running through the woods behind neighborhoods and connecting them to schools, shopping, the lakes and the amphitheater. A lot of families here use a cart the way families elsewhere use a second car for short trips. The city has its own registration rules for carts, including a minimum age, and they are worth reading before you buy one.

The villages

The city is organized into villages: Aberdeen, Braelinn, Glenloch, Kedron and Wilksmoor, the last of which was annexed in the early 2000s. Each village is a cluster of subdivisions tied into the path network.

Inside the villages the housing ranges from townhomes and smaller homes on cul-de-sacs to large homes on golf courses and lake lots. Rayshell has sold listings in Peachtree City neighborhoods including Smokerise Plantation, Glen Clarin and Eastwind Estates. Because the villages differ in age, lot size and distance to the lakes and to Highway 54 and Highway 74, deciding which village fits you is usually a more useful first step than picking a price.

Lakes, parks and the amphitheater

Lake Peachtree was created in 1957 by damming Flat Creek, and sits near the center of the city. Lake Kedron is the northern lake, and Lake McIntosh opened in 2013.

The Fred – the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater on McIntosh Trail – seats about 2,500 and runs a concert season where you can bring a cooler and park for free. The Line Creek Nature Area is a 70-acre preserve on the Fayette-Coweta line with almost three miles of trails and a fishing dock. The Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center has a 25-yard competition pool, a heated teaching pool and indoor courts.

Golfers have three private clubs: Flat Creek, Braelinn and Planterra Ridge.

Schools

Public schools are run by Fayette County Public Schools, a county-wide district. McIntosh High School is in Peachtree City, and Starr’s Mill High School, which has a Fayetteville address, serves the southern part of the city. Attendance follows the address, so confirm the zoned schools for a particular house with the district, and get current performance information from the district or the Georgia Department of Education rather than from a listing.

Work and commuting

Peachtree City is not only a bedroom community. Several large employers are based here, including the U.S. headquarters of Hoshizaki America on Highway 74 South, and operations for Panasonic Automotive, Cooper Lighting Solutions, Gerresheimer and Rinnai.

For Atlanta commuters, the main route is Highway 74 north through Tyrone to I-85, then I-85 north past Hartsfield-Jackson, which is roughly 25 miles from the city. Highway 54 runs east to Fayetteville. For private pilots, Atlanta Regional Airport – Falcon Field is a general aviation airport inside the city.
