What Conyers is like

Conyers is the county seat of Rockdale County, and it sits on the I-20 corridor east of Atlanta. The 2020 census counted a little over 17,000 people inside the city limits, but the Conyers mailing address covers far more of the county than that, so a lot of the homes you will see with a Conyers address are in unincorporated Rockdale rather than the city itself. It is worth knowing which one a house is in, because it decides who provides some services and how the tax bill is put together.

What sets Conyers apart from other I-20 suburbs is that it has a real historic center and an unusual amount of protected land for a place this close to the city: an Olympic venue, a large monastery property and a state park all sit within a short drive of most neighborhoods.

Olde Town Conyers

Olde Town Conyers is the city’s historic downtown, laid out along the railroad. Many of its buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Conyers Welcome Center is in the historic depot on Railroad Street, and the “Dinky,” a 1905 steam locomotive, is on display nearby. The Lewis Vaughn Botanical Garden is part of the same district. Olde Town is the most walkable part of Conyers, so buyers who want to be near restaurants and events usually start their search close to it.

The Horse Park, the monastery and Panola Mountain

The Georgia International Horse Park was built for the 1996 Olympic Games. It hosted all of the equestrian events, the first Olympic mountain bike race ever held, and the final events of the modern pentathlon. It covers roughly 1,400 acres and is still in regular use for horse shows, events and trails.

The Monastery of the Holy Spirit, a Trappist monastery founded in 1944, sits south of the city on Highway 212. Its grounds run to more than 2,300 acres and include a heritage center museum and a bonsai garden that are open to visitors.

Panola Mountain State Park is on the county’s southwest edge, where Rockdale meets Henry and DeKalb counties along the South River. The granite mountain itself is in Rockdale County; the park covers about 1,600 acres.

Neighborhoods and housing

Most of Conyers’ housing is suburban single-family subdivisions, from established neighborhoods to newer construction. Established subdivisions such as Princeton Way, built in the late 1980s and early 1990s off Colonial Drive west of Highway 212, and Brentwood, where the Oaks at Brentwood section went up in the mid-1990s, give buyers mature trees and an established street. Schools

Public schools are run by Rockdale County Public Schools, a single county-wide district. It has three traditional high schools: Heritage High School, Rockdale County High School and Salem High School. Attendance zones follow the address, so confirm the assigned schools for a specific house with the district before you make an offer, and get current performance information from the district and the Georgia Department of Education rather than from a listing.

Commuting from Conyers

Conyers is an I-20 town. Exits 80 and 82 serve the city, and I-20 runs west into downtown Atlanta, about 24 miles away. Hartsfield-Jackson is reached by taking I-20 west to I-285 and around the south side of the Perimeter. Highway 138 connects Conyers south to Stockbridge and I-75, which is useful for anyone working in Henry County or on the south side.
